The Heard Museum, a fixture in Phoenix since 1929, is a private non-profit organization and has enchanted visitors from around the world with the art, culture and history of American Indians, with an emphasis on tribes of the Southwest. NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS RESOURCE COLLECTION

The Native American Artists Resource Collection is a cornerstone of the Billie Jane Baguley Library and Archives. With over 25,000 Native American artist files, the Native American Artists Resource Collection of the Heard Museum and its online version are the largest collection and database of its kind. This burgeoning collection offers information on traditional to contemporary Native American artists, performers and writers. The collection contains selected biographical information found in 300 linear feet of physical files. Materials collected are business cards, journal and newspaper articles, photographs, digital files, resumes, exhibition catalogues, correspondence, documented interviews and gallery announcements to name a few. Each file also includes an artist biography report that provides basic biographical information, a list of the artist’s exhibitions, fairs and markets, awards and prizes, and citations to published resources about the artist based upon Library holdings. The report also indicates if the artist is represented in the object collections of the Heard Museum. With the generosity of artists and donors combined with the hard work and dedication of volunteers and museum staff, this premiere resource has documented the great artistic achievements of Native American artists for over 40 years.

EXHIBITIONS

Substance of Stars is a presentation by four Indigenous communities that examines the collection of the Heard Museum from Indigenous perspectives, across a wide variety of media and time periods. The project is the culmination of a three year collaboration thanks to a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., which fosters the study of world religions. The exhibition incorporates Indigenous languages, sky knowledge, and spiritual values, and includes elements of the origin stories that form Native identities. Included are the O’odham, whose traditional lands include modern-day Phoenix, Arizona, where the Heard Museum sits; and the Diné (Navajo Nation), whose homeland (referred to as Dinétah) extends across what is today the states of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. To the far Northwest, included are the Central Yup’ik of Alaska and other Arctic cultures, and looking Northeast, the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy), with emphasis on the Seneca, who live in what is now New York State.

Substance of Stars contains a special video installation which prioritizes the profound interaction between Native knowledge and the Earth. In a large gallery called the Sky-Dome, visitors enter an immersive environment in which they are surrounded by images and sounds from the natural landscape.

25th ANNUAL KATSINA MARKETPLACE

The Tradition of Katsina Carving Comes to Life at the Heard Museum’s 25th Annual Katsina Marketplace on April 10, 2027. The Heard Museum Shop’s Annual Katsina Marketplace offers a unique opportunity to meet talented carvers, witness carving demonstrations, enjoy live music, and take part in our Signature Katsina Doll raffle! This free event is the largest gathering of Hopi and Pueblo carvers, bringing together renowned artists, collectors, and enthusiasts.
