Akwesasne Cultural Center
The Akwesasne Cultural Center is home to a collection of artifacts that tell the fascinating story of the Mohawk people. During this guided tour, guests will experience Mohawk cultural lifeways through art, storytelling, and artifacts. A wampum exhibit room features more than a dozen replica belts and the authentic Wolf Belt, a 200-year-old historical record repatriated to Akwesasne.

Our people have created stunning, intricate works of art for decoration and utility for centuries, passing down their traditional knowledge of basket making and responsible sourcing through many generations. Discover loom beading
Loom beading has been practiced by the Haudenosaunee since the 16th century. Perhaps the most widely recognized example of this technique among Haudenosaunee wampum belts is the Hiawatha belt. Produced on a loom ranging from 12 inches to 6 feet in length, these belts were not worn but rather used to document agreements and events. Learn about the evolution of this cultural artform, and how artist Kelly Back of Fire Loom Creations uses similar techniques to create custom pieces and award-winning art.

The Mohawk people have a close relationship with the land. We give thanks to all of creation in the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen, or “Words Before All Else.“ Our medicine plants, ononhkwa’shón:’a in our language, have always provided us with aid, healing, and balance. That relationship continues today, as stewards like Sateiokwen Bucktooth carry on the tradition of identifying, harvesting, and utilizing plant medicines.
