Located in Chicago along historic Route 66, the American Indian Center of Chicago is one of the oldest urban Native American community centers in the United States. Established in 1953, the center provides cultural programming, educational opportunities and community support for Native peoples living in and visiting the Chicago area.
The center emerged during a period when many Native individuals relocated to cities through federal relocation programs, creating a need for culturally grounded spaces that foster community connection and preserve traditions. Today, it continues to support intertribal engagement while promoting awareness of Native cultures, histories and contemporary contributions.
MISSION
The American Indian Center of Chicago is dedicated to supporting Native American communities through cultural preservation, education and advocacy. Its mission focuses on strengthening Indigenous identity, promoting intertribal unity and providing resources that enhance community wellness.
Through programming, partnerships and outreach, the center works to ensure Native traditions, languages and cultural practices remain visible and accessible in an urban setting. The organization also promotes public understanding of Indigenous histories and contemporary experiences.
HISTORY
Founded in 1953, the center developed as a gathering space for Native people from diverse tribal nations living in Chicago. It offered social services, cultural programming and advocacy at a time when many Native families were adjusting to urban life.
Over time, the center expanded its role to include youth programs, community events, language revitalization efforts and cultural celebrations. It continues to serve as a hub for intertribal collaboration and Indigenous cultural visibility in Chicago.

CULTURAL PROGRAMMING
Workshops & Classes
The center hosts cultural classes that may include beadwork, regalia-making, drum and song instruction, storytelling and traditional arts. Language learning sessions and cultural education workshops are occasionally offered based on community participation and instructor availability. Classes often emphasize intergenerational knowledge sharing and cultural preservation.
Youth & Family Programs
Programs support Native youth through mentorship, cultural education and community-building activities designed to strengthen identity and connection.

Community Gatherings
Seasonal celebrations, social events and cultural gatherings encourage intertribal connection and cultural continuity.
Educational Outreach
The center partners with schools and organizations to provide education about Native cultures and contemporary Indigenous issues.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer opportunities are also available for those interested in supporting Indigenous-led initiatives.
