Creek Nation Council House

Creek Nation Council House Information

Located in downtown Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the Creek Council House Museum preserves the historic seat of government of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Built in 1878, the two-story brick building once served as the Capitol of the Muscogee Nation during the period following Removal to Indian Territory. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of Tribal governance, sovereignty, and resilience.

ABOUT CREEK NATION COUNCIL HOUSE

After being forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands in the southeastern United States during the 1830s, the Muscogee (Creek) people reestablished their national government in present-day Oklahoma. The Creek Council House functioned as the center of legislative activity, judicial proceedings, and national decision-making. It was here that elected leaders debated laws, addressed national affairs, and guided their Nation through a complex era of treaty negotiations and federal pressure.

The museum now interprets this period through photographs, documents, furnishings, and exhibits that tell the story of Muscogee political life and cultural continuity. Visitors can explore restored chambers and learn about the structure of Muscogee governance, clan systems, and community organization. Exhibits also address the allotment era and the profound changes imposed on Tribal governments at the turn of the 20th century.

Okmulgee remains the capital of the Muscogee Nation today, and the building’s preservation reflects ongoing efforts to honor and reclaim historic spaces of governance. A visit offers insight not only into the past but into the enduring sovereignty of one of Oklahoma’s largest Tribal Nations.
