Talking Stick Golf Club

Talking Stick Golf Club Information

Grab a Talking Stick and record your own story.

The O’odham Course at Talking Stick Golf Club (formerly know as the North Course) is a standout Bill Coore & Crenshaw design that leans into desert links-style elements-wide fairways, artful bunkering, and subtle strategic nuances.

O’ODHAM COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Layout & Design: Flat, arid landscape turned into a strategic gem:  broad, angular holes with crowned greens and close-cropped run-up areas. Rather than dramatic elevation, it offers delicate contouring and thoughtful shot options.

Strategic Play

Emphasizes accuracy and angles rather than pure length-approach shots must be precise, especially around raised, subtly sloped greens.

Notable holes like the split-fairway par-4 12th and the tree-lined doglegs demand smart course management.

Aesthetics & Experience

Natural desert vegetation, no artificial lakes, spectacular mountain vistas, and occasional glimpses of wild horses.

Minimalist layout:  the course feels rooted in the environment, not forced upon it.

The Piipaash Course at Talking Stick Golf Club (formally know as the South Course) is the more conventional, parkland-style companion to the minimalist Piipaash layout.  It offers a refined yet strategic experience designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

PIIPAASH COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Tree-lined Fairways & Raised Greens. The course features lush eucalyptus and cottonwood flanking each hole, contrasting the open desert of the Piipaash. Greens are elevated and well-protected by bunkers and slopes.

Strategic Simplicity

Piipaash provides a straightforward “what you see is what you get” layout-no hidden tricks, but precise shot-making is still required to stay in play and hold the raised greens.

Parkland meets Desert Character

Designed for an aerial game, it blends traditional course styling with desert vistas visible beyond the surrounding trees.

COORE AND CRENSHAW DESIGN

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw are widely regarded as two of the finest golf course architects of the modern era.  Together, they lead Coore & Crenshaw, a design firm celebrated for its minimalist approach, deep respect for natural terrain, and emphasis on strategic variety rather than visual extravagance.  Their work is especially admired by purists and architecture aficionados.

Their projects at Talking Stick Golf Club were on of their first major public-access desert courses, and it’s still a standout example of their versatility. Instead of resorting to flashy desert features or artificial elevation, they embraced the natural flatness of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa lands, crafting two courses with contrasting identities.

“When commissioned to design Talking Stick Golf Club, our charge was to create two golf courses to accommodate public play yet each decidedly different, with respect to playing characteristics. Talking Stick Golf Club’s O’odham Course (formerly North Course), with its broad, angular holes, rewards thoughtful play through the rise of its many options according to one’s level of skill. Its low profile, slightly crowned greens and close-cropped approaches encourage running as well as aerial assaults. The Piipaash Course (formerly South Course) with its tree lined fairways and raised greens defended at the sides offers a more straightforward style of play. It presents its challenge and strategy in an open and clear-cut fashion. Whichever course one chooses or prefers, it was our desire to portray golf in a traditional sense, which quietly merges with its tranquil desert surroundings.”– Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw
