Wasxayam Pomki Museum

Wasxayam Pomki Museum Information

The Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians is one of six such Tribes in Southern California composed of Luiseño people. The Reservation was established near the Payomkawichum Village of Wáșxa, located near California State Route 76.

The Wasxayam Pomki Museum, meaning "house of the sacred," celebrates Luiseño heritage and culture. Located in a landscape deeply connected to tribal history, the museum blends traditional and modern design to create a welcoming space for learning and reflection. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits featuring beautiful Luiseño basketry, oral history recordings, pottery, tools and ceremonial regalia and photographs that chronicle both the beauty and the battles of Native life in California. These artifacts share the story of daily life, spiritual practices and the strong cultural identity of the Luiseño people.

The museum also highlights important historical events, such as the diversion of the San Luis Rey River, which had a lasting impact on Southern California Tribes. Other exhibits focus on language revitalization, veterans’ service and the ongoing efforts to preserve and share Tribal traditions with future generations.
