World Championship Hoop Dance Contest

World Championship Hoop Dance Contest Information

Held annually at the Heard Museum, the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest is one of the most recognized Indigenous dance competitions in North America. The event brings together Indigenous hoop dancers from across the United States and Canada to celebrate artistry, athleticism and cultural storytelling through movement.

A hoop dancer typically begins with a single hoop to represent the start of life. As the dance progresses to a steady drumbeat, they add more hoops—sometimes up to 50 at once—using their hands and feet to interlock them into intricate static and dynamic shapes.

The two-day competition typically takes place each February in Phoenix and draws thousands of visitors, families and community members. The 37th annual contest was scheduled for February 6–7, 2027, continuing a long-standing tradition of cultural preservation and performance.

HISTORY

The World Championship Hoop Dance Contest began in 1991 and moved to the Heard Museum in 1992, where it has been hosted annually since. The event was created to honor and preserve the art of hoop dancing and to provide a platform for Indigenous dancers to share their traditions with broader audiences.

Over time, the contest has grown into an internationally recognized gathering, featuring dancers from diverse tribal nations and showcasing the evolution of hoop dance as both cultural expression and competitive performance.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Hoop dancing is a form of storytelling through movement, with dancers using multiple hoops to create symbolic shapes such as animals, flowers, baskets and other elements representing the natural world. The dance reflects themes of balance, connection and the circle of life across many Indigenous cultures.

The contest supports cultural continuity by providing a space for intergenerational learning, where youth and experienced dancers alike share knowledge, creativity and tradition.
