Suquamish is one of many Indian Tribes in the Pacific Northwest who thrived in their traditional life ways before the arrival of non-Indians. Taking their name from the traditional Luschootseed phrase for “people of the clear salt water” these expert fisherman, canoe builders and basket weavers have lived in harmony with the lands and waterways along Washington’s Centeral Puget Sound Region for thousands of years.
The Suquamish people have inhabited the Kitsap Peninsula, Bainbridge Island, Blake Island, and the broader Puget Sound region for thousands of years.
The Suquamish Tribe has approximately 1,200 enrolled tribal citizens.
While the overall population living within the boundaries of the Port Madison Indian Reservation is higher and includes non-tribal residents, roughly half of the total enrolled Suquamish citizens reside directly on reservation land. The rest of the tribal members live in surrounding Pacific Northwest communities such as Seattle, Tacoma, Bremerton, and Poulsbo.
