Situated in Ponca City within driving distance of Oklahoma’s Route 66 corridor, Standing Bear Park and Education Center commemorates Chief Standing Bear of the Ponca Nation and his legal fight for recognition of Native personhood under U.S. law.
ABOUT STANDING BEAR PARK & EDUCATION CENTER
In 1879, Standing Bear successfully argued in federal court that Native Americans are persons within the meaning of U.S. law. The case established an important legal precedent regarding civil rights and federal authority over tribal nations.
The Standing Bear Museum & Education Center honors and reflects these six area tribes:
Kaw Nation (Kanza)
Osage Nation
Otoe-Missouria Tribe
Pawnee Nation
Ponca Tribe (Chief Standing Bear's tribe)
Tonkawa Tribe
Visitors can explore displays featuring historical photographs, courtroom documents, cultural items and artwork representing multiple tribal nations. The museum presents a broader message of human rights, sovereignty and resilience, placing the Ponca story within the wider context of Native civil rights history.
For Route 66 travelers exploring northern Oklahoma, the park and education center provide an educational and reflective destination highlighting a pivotal moment in federal Indian law.
